We are proud to announce a hackathon of the OpenWebSearch.eu research project,
where you can design and develop your own personal search engine.

Enrich and build an alternative web search solution

We offer access and instruction to use our technical infrastructure that consists
of an open web index and the open source MOSAIC framework.
This enables you to build an alternative web search solution with new features and your ideas.
The MOSAIC website provides a general overview
and the MOSAIC developer guide explains
how to use MOSAIC to create search applications.

Possible tasks:
- Create a new web interface for the MOSAIC web service (e.g. faceted search)
- Enrich the MOSAIC framework with new features (e.g. new ranking or filter method)
- Process web data to provide information for search and retrieval (e.g. use large
language models to create text summary of natural language processing to detect detect problematic content)
- Develop a conversational or interactive search interface for dialog-based information retrieval
Organisation and Participation
The hackathon is organised by the CoDiS Lab,
a research group of the Institute of Interactive Systems and Data Science at Graz University of Technology.
You will work in a small team (2-4 people). At the end of the hackathon
each team will present the result in the plenary assembly.
Requirements and conditions:
- You need to register to the event (see below)
- You need to bring your own computer that you can use for development
- You should have some basic knowledge of web development. Higher qualification in search engines or large language models is welcome, but not necessary
- We cannot pay travel or hotel expenses if you do not live in Graz

- We offer free pizza for lunch, and coffee and cookies in the breaks, and beer in the evening.
- Team members of completed projects will also receive gift items, such as bags, flash drives, or umbrellas
- Your result (abstract, image, team members) is mentioned on the OpenWebSearch.eu project website. TO BE CONFIRMED
- There is the opportunity to present your results (online or on-site) at the Open Web Search Symposium (OSSYM 2024) and publish an extended abstract. TO BE CONFIRMED
Registration
Participation is free, but you need to register to the event
(Deadline: 22 May 2024).
There is a limitation of a maximum number of 30 participants.
You will get a confirmation email a few days after registration.
